PROGRAMS

YCT has four main programs as mentioned below that contribute to YCT’s strategic plan and the central aim of making women and youth more actively involved in the political, social and developmental process in Myanmar.

Gender Equality

Gender equality is fundamental human rights and it is important as other human rights. The gender stereotypes obstructing women’s full and equal participation with men economically, socially, and politically. Traditionally, people’s mind-sets reinforce gender stereotypes of men as breadwinners, natural leaders, producers, and combatants, and women as wives, mothers, or reproductive roles. Women are generally unequal in participation, legal rights, economics, education, or other fields. To address the gender inequality issues and promote the gender equality in Myanmar, YCT has been designing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating the programs and projects from a gender equality and women’s rights perspectives. She Leads program is one of the programs, which addressing and promoting gender equality issue in Myanmar. She Leads program is linkage with community level by building and enhancing the capacity of community people on gender equality and National level by advocating the Government Ministries and concerned stakeholders to develop laws and policies which welfare and development for women.

Governance

Women generally have a secondary role in Myanmar society and their participation regarding decision-making roles is also typically limited in the governance structure of Government Departments, political parties and other Institutions. Women’s participation in governance in all sectors needs to increase. YCT has intervened to increasing women’s representation in policy-makings, and decision-makings at all different levels by providing series of trainings, and workshops and advocating different stake holders to develop policies which are most effective for increasing women’s participation in governance. Link with gender equality program, YCT has implemented the governance program for equal participation of women in formal and informal political and decision-making, and on oversight mechanism at all levels of governance structure. Civic engagement, leadership, community empowerment, and rule of law training programs are implementing under governance program.

Women Economic Empowerment

Myanmar’s women are facing major barriers in employment, education and health care. That is why Myanmar is placing women empowerment related with different sectors such as economic, education, health, etc. at the center of its national strategic plan. Conventionally, women’s lives are sunk in their daily works such as cooking, washing, carrying water, gathering firewood, etc. without earning any wages. They are just living think in the box and no environment there to imitate to think out of the box and change their conventional concept. The roles of women are missing in the public affair and their lives are just sunk in their families’ daily issues. YCT has been implementing women economic program to reduce the burden of unpaid work by raising awareness on shared domestic responsibility between men and women in the household and providing vocational trainings.

YCT has provided a range of trainings on business planning, product development, and management; accounting, market assessment. YCT has planned to conduct surveys and data collection on women’s economic empowerment, including employment, work, and entrepreneurship. In addition, it has planned to advocate different stakeholders to develop policies and regulatory frameworks that promote women’s entrepreneurship and access to markets.

Resilience focusing on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)

Myanmar is exposed to several natural YCT hazards which include cyclone, floods, landslide, and earthquake, etc.. The costal regions are exposed to cyclones, and storms surges while major parts of the country are at risk. The rainfall-induced flooding is recurring across the country. YCT has implemented disaster risk reduction activities in the Rakhine State to mitigate the impact of natural hazards by raising awareness on the impact of hazards such as cyclone, flooding and landslide, etc.. and basic first aid, how to make life-saving devices for floods and how to make sandbags to protect homes from flooding. In addition, YCT has provided non-food and food items for hazard affected people during the rehabilitation period.
